Knight of Cups

Posted on Jan 4, 2016

No one cares about reality anymore. At least no one in the world of Hollywood celebrity, riches and excess depicted in Director Terrence Malick’s film, Knight of Cups. In Hollywood they tell you that anything is possible. Screenwriter Rick (Christian Bale) is one of the many people who get caught up in the system and start to believe it’s true. But as Rick begins to see, it’s a world of illusions.

Like the Knight of Cups Tarot card referred to in the movie’s title, Rick is easily bored and constantly seeks outside stimulation. But he is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer. Living in Los Angeles he gets involved with a long stream of women who provide a distraction to the emptiness that he feels. Because although Rick has found fame and fortune in Hollywood, he experiences an existential crisis so strong that he can no longer even remember the man he wanted to be. Will he find the way from darkness to light…or not?

Knight of Cups was both written and directed by Terrence Malick. This romantic fantasy drama premiered in the main competition section at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2015. It is scheduled to be released into American theaters on March 4, 2016 by Broad Green Pictures. Also starring Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman. Rated R for some nudity, sexuality and language.
